Fez is Morocco’s oldest imperial city and the cultural and spiritual heart of the country. On this two-day tour you will get lost (with a guide) in the alleyways of its medieval medina, discover crafts that have remained unchanged for centuries and take a trip to the Roman ruins of Volubilis.
Day 01: Meeting Point – Fez Medina – Hotels
At 9:00 a.m. you will meet your driver/guide at the meeting point, the Blue Gate (Bab Boujloud). We will begin the tour at the Royal Palace (Dar el Makhzen), famous for its impressive golden doors, and continue through the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, with its wooden balconies and unique history.
We will then head up to the Marinid Tombs viewpoint, which offers the best panoramic view of the medina. In the afternoon we will enter Fez el-Bali on foot to explore its alleyways: the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Nejjarine Fountain and the surroundings of Al Quaraouiyine University, considered one of the oldest in the world. Lunch at a traditional restaurant in the medina. We will end the day with mint tea on a terrace overlooking the city’s rooftops, followed by transfer to the hotels.
Day 02: Meeting Point – Volubilis – Moulay Idriss – Hotels
At 8:00 a.m. we will meet again at the meeting point to visit the Chouara Tannery, where you can watch from a terrace as leather is dyed in large, colourful vats using techniques that date back to the Middle Ages. We will then visit a pottery and zellige cooperative, where you will see the traditional Fez mosaic being crafted from start to finish.
At midday we will travel (approx. 1 hour) to Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman archaeological site in Morocco, with its mosaics, columns and the Arch of Caracalla. Lunch in the holy town of Moulay Idriss, set on a hillside overlooking the ruins. In the afternoon, return to Fez and transfer to the hotels.
