To explore northern Morocco is to immerse yourself in a world of colors, aromas and ancient traditions. With this 3-day tour from Tangier to Chefchaouen and Fez, travelers discover some of the most emblematic cities of the country, surrounded by mountains, legends and fascinating architecture. This itinerary is ideal for those who want to see the best of northern Morocco in a short time, without losing authenticity and cultural depth.
We begin the tour from Tangier, a vibrant, multicultural port city located at the meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. With European and Arab influences, Tangier offers a first contact with both modern and traditional Morocco.
On our way to the Rif Mountains, we stop in Tetouan, known as “the white dove.” Its medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site, reflecting the strong Andalusian influence in its architecture and daily life. We stroll through its narrow streets, visit Hassan II Square, and discover its tranquil and authentic atmosphere.
We continue to Chefchaouen, the blue gem of the north. This charming mountain town, located 600 meters above sea level, is painted entirely in shades of blue and white, making it one of the most photogenic destinations in the country.
In the afternoon, we explore:
The Medina of Chefchaouen, with its blue doors, hanging flowers, and artisan shops.
Uta el-Hammam Square, the heart of the city.
The 15th-century Kasbah, which offers panoramic views from its tower.
Ras El Ma Spring, where mountain water flows through cool alleyways.
We spend the night in a traditional riad within the medina, with views of the Rif Mountains.
After breakfast, we head south. Our first stop is the Volubilis archaeological site, an ancient Roman city declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, we discover well-preserved mosaics, majestic columns, and remnants of what was once a prosperous Roman city in North Africa.
We continue to Meknes, one of the four imperial cities of Morocco. Although less visited than Fez or Marrakech, Meknes is home to impressive monuments such as:
Bab Mansour Gate, one of the largest and most beautiful gates in the country.
Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the sultan who made Meknes a powerful capital in the 17th century.
The ancient royal stables and granaries.
After lunch at a local restaurant, we head to Fez, where we will spend the night in an authentic riad within its historic medina.
This day is dedicated to exploring Fez, considered the cultural and spiritual capital of the country. Founded in the 8th century, Fez preserves one of the largest and best-preserved medieval medinas in the world, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Accompanied by an official guide, we visit:
Bou Inania Medersa, a stunningly beautiful Quranic school.
Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University, founded in 859 and recognized as the oldest continually operating university in the world.
The tanneries of Fez, where leathers are still dyed by hand in a colorful and traditional spectacle.
Souks for ceramics, brass, textiles, and spices.
We also explore the new medina, with its Jewish quarter (mellah) and monumental gates such as Bab Bou Jeloud.
In the afternoon, travelers can choose to:
Stay in Fez and continue their independent exploration.
Return to Tangier (a 4.5-hour drive).
Take a connection to other cities such as Marrakech or Casablanca.
